The Ayer Hitam Utara Forest Reserve in Muar, Johor is also fondly known as the "Jewel of the South". It is the largest and last remaining peat swamp forest in the state of Johor.
This landscape is also the only peat swamp forest recognised and protected as a Forest State Park in Peninsular Malaysia. Under the watchful eye of the Johor Forestry Department and the tireless efforts of the Ayer Hitam community, this forest reserve has become a haven for biodiversity and a popular living lab for researchers far and wide.
