Permata Village in West Kalimantan is one of the many communities that call peatlands home. This is unsurprising as Indonesia has the largest peatland area in Southeast Asia.
The village is part of the government’s transmigration programme. This influx of diversity improved the peatland landscape by introducing alternative livelihoods, steering the community away from monoculture. In fact, locals practice "Tumbang Imas" - a fire-free method of peatland clearing.
Unfortunately, this avoidance of fire has led to another issue - the use of heavy machinery to clear the land.
